My Ex-Fiancée, The Psycho, and The Woman Who Saved Me

At what should have been Serena and my ninth wedding, her mentally ill ex-boyfriend, Victor Reed, showed up to cause trouble again.

He held a knife to my mother Evelyn’s throat, a manic, deranged laugh echoing through the venue.

“Serena, you’re not allowed to marry him!”

“And you, you’d better agree to let me take over your wedding. I’m the groom. If you don’t, I’ll kill her.”

Serena looked at him with an expression of deep concern, pulling off her veil and dropping it to the floor. Her eyes showed a mix of helplessness and pleading.

“Alex, you see, it’s not that I don’t want to marry you; it’s that we can’t provoke Victor.”

“I promised his mother I would never send him to a psychiatric facility.”

Guests at the wedding started openly drinking, watching the chaotic scene unfold, gossiping about our endless drama, and shooting me looks of scorn.

I clenched my fists, then unclenched them, only to clench them again.

The internal battle was tearing me apart.

Finally, I pulled off my wedding ring and tossed it to Serena:

“Enjoy your happily ever after!”

Serena, I’m truly letting you go.
