Chapter 1
Six years with Chloe, and in the end, I still couldn’t compare to her first love.
The 88th time her first love, Asher, stood on a rooftop, claiming depression, she shoved a fake divorce agreement at me.
“What are you waiting for? Sign it, now!”
I knew it was fake, but I still refused. I begged her to find another way.
But Chloe stubbornly shook her head, yelling at me, “Asher is literally dying! Do you even care about our marriage? Have you no sympathy? I was so wrong about you. I should have married Asher back then!”
I froze. She said she regretted marrying me?
I shook my head, a bitter laugh escaping me. Of course. She’d never loved me.
So I decided I wouldn’t cling on anymore.
I secretly swapped out the fake divorce agreement for a real one, signed it, and then turned around and married someone else in a wedding for the ages.
Chloe watched me sign the divorce papers, her face instantly changing. She leaned in and kissed my cheek, bubbling with excitement. “Baby, you’re amazing!”
“Don’t worry, I’m just faking it for Asher. I’m still your loving wife.”
I could see it clearly: her excitement wasn’t about me. It was because she could finally be with Asher openly, without needing any more excuses.
Clutching the divorce agreement, she didn’t hesitate. She turned and headed straight for the rooftop upstairs.
As she turned, her arm brushed against my leg, which was still recovering. I cried out, a sharp pang shooting through my heart, followed by a dull, persistent ache.
She probably forgot I was still lying in this hospital bed, my leg injured from saving her, needing constant care.
I gave a bitter laugh. Of course. In her heart, compared to Asher, I was nothing.
Besides, we were divorced now. I didn’t expect her to take care of me.
After she left, I opened a super popular live stream.
On screen, Asher was on the rooftop. Everyone was tense, trying to talk him down, but it was useless.
Then, Chloe suddenly appeared in the frame.
She eagerly pulled out the divorce papers and held them up to Asher. “Asher, look! I divorced him!”
“You’re the one I love most. Please come down, okay? I’ll stay by your side forever, never leaving.”
My fingers paused. *That* was her real truth, wasn’t it?
As she spoke, she slowly moved closer.
She reached him, ignoring the knife in his hand, and pulled him into a tight embrace.
She was always so meticulous about her skin, she wouldn’t even let me gently touch her during intimate moments. Yet now, for Asher, her collarbone was grazed.
The two embraced tightly, weeping with joy, and shared a passionate kiss that lasted for ten minutes.
The live stream chat exploded with viewers calling it “true love” and shipping them relentlessly.
I couldn't watch another second. I switched off the screen.
I squeezed my eyes shut, my entire body trembling.
Nurses came in to change my dressing, chatting loudly about gossip.
“That couple on the rooftop today, the girl was so brave! She dumped her unloved ex-husband and fearlessly pursued true love.”
“Oh, you know, I’ve seen it all, and that girl probably married her ex for all sorts of reasons, but definitely not for love!”
Hearing them, it hit me. It was true.
Chloe had never loved me.
I had just loved her too much, living in a fantasy of love, a one-sided devotion.
Suddenly, I heard sounds from outside the door. It was Chloe, holding Asher’s hand, coming back.
They looked like a new couple, her face flushed with a sweet bashfulness.
In all the years we were together, I had never seen that expression on her.
So, this is how she blushes for someone she truly loves.
Even though we were divorced, that moment still felt incredibly bitter.
As they passed my room, our eyes met. Chloe looked a little guilty, but she still linked arms with Asher and walked into the room next door.
