Jasper and I parted ways on bad terms.

After leaving the training ground, I slung my bag over my shoulder and headed to a diner not far from campus to meet Caleb.

"How have you been?" Caleb asked.

"Same as always, I guess."

"You don’t look too cheerful."

My mind immediately flashed back to Jasper’s pained expression earlier. After so many years together, how could I not feel miserable?

"So, what’s going on with you and Jasper?"

I frowned, not wanting to talk about him. "Why are you asking?"

Caleb sighed. "If you still like Jasper, then just be stubborn for a while, but now you’re both miserable."

"Before, you were in the Omega dorms, roommates with Ashton, and Jasper wanted to stick to you twenty-four-seven, so it was easy for him to run into Ashton. Now that you’ve moved out, they won't have any reason to interact."

"Rowan, I hope you think this through. You and Jasper have been together for so many years; it wasn't easy. With your terrible temper, do you really think you’ll find anyone else more tolerant than Jasper?"

I fell silent, Jasper’s pained eyes replaying in my mind.

Hesitation crept into my heart.

I believed the decision I made was for the good of both of us.

It was precisely because I loved Jasper that I couldn’t bear to see him suffer so much during his rut.

Even if we loved each other, the mutually repelling pheromones between two Alphas would make even kissing painful.

If we kept dragging it out, it would only erode all the good memories we had…

"Can love truly conquer pheromones?" I asked Caleb.

Caleb replied earnestly, "You never doubted it when you were a Beta. Why are you so hesitant now that you’ve differentiated into an Alpha?"

"Ashton aside, do you lack confidence in Jasper, or in yourself?"

It suddenly clicked for me. After dinner, I sent Jasper a message, asking him to meet so we could talk things through.

Just as I reached the school gate, I suddenly heard someone say:

"Holy crap, I heard an Omega in the Omega dorms went into heat, and an Alpha hooked up with them right in the dorm…"
